Introduction to Coffee Can Investing
Welcome to the Coffee Can Investor substack.
Coffee Can Investing is the methodology of investing whereby you invest with a view of not selling for a fixed long period of time, typically about 10 years. This methodology of investing was discovered by investment manager Robert Kirby and the name derived the Old West when people would keep their valuables in a coffee can, put it under their mattress and leave it there for safekeeping.
While I will write extensively about why I think Coffee Can Investing is a superior method of investing, while forcing the investor to think holistically about their approach to investment, as against trading, during the course of this blog, this post is to introduce you to what I intend to use this substack for.
Firstly, some disclosure. I have been heading on the path of becoming a coffee can investor myself and beginning 2021, I have placed a large part of my own portfolio into a coffee can portfolio. While I have blogging on and off about this effort, I am now going to use this platform to commit to writing about my coffee can portfolio in a more focussed manner.
My Commitments to Readers
I will stay true to my coffee can investment portfolio right through to its intended conclusion date, which is 2031 as I write this.
I will share what I can about my investment with a view of encouraging readers to think about this methodology of investing. Life is forever evolving and while I don’t know what holds the future for my time commitment and my personal life, so long as I have time to research and put together my thoughts I will continue to write here and keep all readers informed about my progress. Expect a post every week or two.
The hope is that coffee can investing will be a superior way to achieving one’s financial goals, and hence wins where appropriate will be shared and celebrated. However, this journey is not expected to be all rosy and I am sure to suffer setbacks. If those happen, I commit to writing about it with as much candour as I would use for my wins.
I am very much hoping that this journey will be exciting and rewarding, both as an intellectual journey as well as an investment experience.
While I have been blogging in the past, the blog has been a collection of too many generic personal finance thoughts, rather than being focussed on one particular investment journey. This substack will purposefully hone in on one outcome - documenting the longish journey of being a coffee can investor.
While I will enjoy writing just for the sake of documenting my own monologues, I wish this is as much an enjoyable a read for the readers as it is for me to write. With that in mind, I encourage you to pass on feedback either here through comments or on twitter where I am @shreeni.
With that I encourage you to subscribe to the letter. Give it a shot, read a few posts and if you like it, share it with friends and families who you feel might want to join in the community.
